    Fundamental mechanisms in premixed flame propagation via vortex-flame interactions: Numerical simulations

    The goal of the present study is to assess numerically the ability of single-step and two-step chemical models to describe the main features encountered during the interaction between a two-dimensional vortex pair and a premixed laminar flame. In the two-step mechanism, the reaction kinetics are represented by a first chain branching reaction A + X yields 2X and a second chain termination reaction X + X yields P. This paper presents the fundamental mechanisms occurring during vortex-flame interactions and the relative impact of the major parameters encountered in turbulent premixed flames and suspected of playing a role in quenching mechanism: (1) Influence of stretch is investigated by analyzing the contribution of curvature and tangential strain on the local structure of the flame. The effect of Lewis number on the flame response to a strained field is analyzed. (2) Radiative heat losses which are suspected to be partially or totally responsible for quenching are also investigated. (3) The effect of the diffusion of the radicals is studied using a two-step mechanism in which an intermediate species is present. The parameters of the two-step mechanism are entirely determined from physical arguments. (4) Precise quantitative comparisons between the DNS and the experimental results of Samaniego et al are performed. These comparisons concern the evolution of the minimum heat release rate found along the flame front during the interaction and the distribution of the heat release rate along the flame front

    Conditional statistics in a turbulent premixed flame derived from direct numerical simulation

    The objective of this paper is to briefly introduce conditional moment closure (CMC) methods for premixed systems and to derive the transport equation for the conditional species mass fraction conditioned on the progress variable based on the enthalpy. Our statistical analysis will be based on the 3-D DNS database of Trouve and Poinsot available at the Center for Turbulence Research. The initial conditions and characteristics (turbulence, thermo-diffusive properties) as well as the numerical method utilized in the DNS of Trouve and Poinsot are presented, and some details concerning our statistical analysis are also given. From the analysis of DNS results, the effects of the position in the flame brush, of the Damkoehler and Lewis numbers on the conditional mean scalar dissipation, and conditional mean velocity are presented and discussed. Information concerning unconditional turbulent fluxes are also presented. The anomaly found in previous studies of counter-gradient diffusion for the turbulent flux of the progress variable is investigated

    Smell and taste changes are early indicators of the COVID-19 pandemic and political decision effectiveness

    In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many governments have taken drastic measures to avoid an overflow of intensive care units. Accurate metrics of disease spread are critical for the reopening strategies. Here, we show that self-reports of smell/taste changes are more closely associated with hospital overload and are earlier markers of the spread of infection of SARS-CoV-2 than current governmental indicators. We also report a decrease in self-reports of new onset smell/taste changes as early as 5 days after lockdown enforcement. Cross-country comparisons demonstrate that countries that adopted the most stringent lockdown measures had faster declines in new reports of smell/taste changes following lockdown than a country that adopted less stringent lockdown measures. We propose that an increase in the incidence of sudden smell and taste change in the general population may be used as an indicator of COVID-19 spread in the population

    R31C GNRH1 mutation and congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism

    Normosmic congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (nCHH) is a rare reproductive disease leading to lack of puberty and infertility. Loss-of-function mutations of GNRH1 gene are a very rare cause of autosomal recessive nCHH. R31C GNRH1 is the only missense mutation that affects the conserved GnRH decapeptide sequence. This mutation was identified in a CpG islet in nine nCHH subjects from four unrelated families, giving evidence for a putative “hot spot”. Interestingly, all the nCHH patients carry this mutation in heterozygosis that strikingly contrasts with the recessive inheritance associated with frame shift and non-sense mutations. Therefore, after exclusion of a second genetic event, a comprehensive functional characterization of the mutant R31C GnRH was undertaken. Using different cellular models, we clearly demonstrate a dramatic reduction of the mutant decapeptide capacity to bind GnRH-receptor, to activate MAPK pathway and to trigger inositol phosphate accumulation and intracellular calcium mobilization. In addition it is less able than wild type to induce lh-beta transcription and LH secretion in gonadotrope cells. Finally, the absence of a negative dominance in vitro offers a unique opportunity to discuss the complex in vivo patho-physiology of this form of nCHH

    Adherence with statins in a real-life setting is better when associated cardiovascular risk factors increase: a cohort study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>While the factors for poor adherence for treatment with statins have been highlighted, the impact of their combination on adherence is not clear.</p> <p>Aims</p> <p>To estimate adherence for statins and whether it differs according to the number of cardiovascular risk factors.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cohort study was conducted using data from the main French national health insurance system reimbursement database. Newly treated patients with statins between September 1 and December 31, 2004 were included. Patients were followed up 15 months. The cohort was split into three groups according to their number of additional cardiovascular risk factors that included age and gender, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease (using co-medications as a <it>proxy</it>). Adherence was assessed for each group by using four parameters: <it>(i) </it>proportion of days covered by statins, <it>(ii) </it>regularity of the treatment over time, <it>(iii) </it>persistence, and <it>(iv) </it>the refill delay.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>16,397 newly treated patients were identified. Of these statin users, 21.7% did not have additional cardiovascular risk factors. Thirty-one percent had two cardiovascular risk factors and 47% had at least three risk factors. All the parameters showed a sub-optimal adherence whatever the group: days covered ranged from 56% to 72%, regularity ranged from 23% to 33% and persistence ranged from 44% to 59%, but adherence was better for those with a higher number of cardiovascular risk factors.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The results confirm that long-term drug treatments are a difficult challenge, particularly in patients at lower risk and invite to the development of therapeutic education.</p

    Population Genetics of Trypanosoma evansi from Camel in the Sudan

    Genetic variation of microsatellite loci is a widely used method for the analysis of population genetic structure of microorganisms. We have investigated genetic variation at 15 microsatellite loci of T. evansi isolated from camels in Sudan and Kenya to evaluate the genetic information partitioned within and between individuals and between sites. We detected a strong signal of isolation by distance across the area sampled. The results also indicate that either, and as expected, T. evansi is purely clonal and structured in small units at very local scales and that there are numerous allelic dropouts in the data, or that this species often sexually recombines without the need of the “normal” definitive host, the tsetse fly or as the recurrent immigration from sexually recombined T. brucei brucei. Though the first hypothesis is the most likely, discriminating between these two incompatible hypotheses will require further studies at much localized scales

    Contrasting Population Structures of Two Vectors of African Trypanosomoses in Burkina Faso: Consequences for Control

    Tsetse flies are insects that transmit trypanosomes to humans (sleeping sickness) and animals (nagana). Controlling these vectors is a very efficient way to control these diseases. In Burkina Faso, a tsetse eradication campaign is presently targeting the northern part of the Mouhoun River Basin. To attain this objective, the approach has to be area-wide, i.e. the control effort targets an entire pest population within a circumscribed area. To assess the level of this isolation, we studied the genetic structure of Glossina palpalis gambiensis and Glossina tachinoides populations in the target area and in the adjacent river basins of the Comoé, the Niger and the Sissili River Basins. Our results suggest an absence of strong genetic isolation of the target populations. We therefore recommend establishing permanent buffer zones between the Mouhoun and the other river basin(s) to prevent reinvasion. This kind of study may be extended to other areas on other tsetse species

    La multitude, la diversité et la complexité des problèmes de contact conduisent à de nombreux modèles mathématiques gouvernés par des équations aux dérivées partielles non linéaires. Motivés par la richesse qu'apporte ce domaine, nous nous proposons d'étudier quelques problèmes de contact dans le cadre des petites et grandes déformations pour des matériaux élastiques et visco-élastiques. Cette thèse présente l'éven\-tail des problèmes abordés et se structure en quatre parties. La première partie contient l'ensemble des outils mathématiques et mécaniques nécéssaires à une bonne compréhension de la suite de ce manuscrit. La deuxième partie porte sur l'étude de trois problèmes élastiques et visco-élastiques dans le cadre des petites déformations. Nous prouvons pour ces problèmes, l'existence, parfois l'unicité, et la dépendance continue des solutions faibles > et >. La troisième partie contient l'étude d'un problème de contact unilatéral sans frottement entre deux corps visco-élastiques en petites déformations. Nous illustrons les résultats théoriques par des simulations numériques en dimension deux. La quatrième partie est entièrement dévouée à la modélisation numérique des problèmes élastiques et visco-élastiques de contact unilatéral avec frottement sec de Coulomb dans le cadre des grandes déformations. Nous présentons des essais numériques de compressions d'un réseau composé de cellules hexagonales en dimension deux.Owing to their inherent diversity and complexity, contact problems lead to various mathematical models governed by nonlinear partial differential equations. Motivated by the richness of this domain, our aim is to study some contact problems involving elastic and viscoelastic materials in the framework of small and large deformation theory. This thesis is structured in four parts. The first one provides the background in Mathematics and Mechanics needed in the rest of the manuscript. The second part concerns the study of three elastic or visocelastic problems in the small strain theory. For these problems we prove existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence of weak solutions in terms of displacements and stress. The third part deals with the study of a unilateral frictionless contact problem between two viscoelastic bodies, again in the framework of small deformations. We illustrate the theoritical results with numerical simulations in dimension two. The fourth part is completely devoted to the numerical modelling of elastic and viscoelastic contact problems with Coulomb law of dry friction in the frame of large deformation.
